I was under the impression that Guy Fawkes was some sort of great patriot, as some of my friends get excited about the Fifth of November whenever it's mentioned, and then say the famous quote: "Remember remember the fifth of November", like he was some sort of hero. It turns out that he was really a political terrorist who was planning on blowing up a building and killing many people. This might be a bit insensitive, but I'd compare it to 9/11. Of course, the gunpowder plot failed, but it would've had a similar outcome. Over the hundreds of years after November 5th, it has become more of an inside joke for people who are familiar with the event. This is unsettling, and I wonder how many other significant events have gone down a similar path.
