In Brian's link, I thought it was really disturbing when the man increasing the voltage was laughing. He was really unhesitant, even when he heard the screams. In Zimbardo's video, I think he also mentioned a similar experiment where the voltage had a "turning point" around 150 V.
The difference between the Hero-man who jumping into train tracks and the men in the voltage experiments really astounded me. It made me wonder whether or not some people are born with more of a tendency to become "evil" or a "hero".
Helen, *why* do you think he was laughing? I am interested in anyone's interpretation of this.
I think that he's partly laughing at the situation he's in. It's just so strange to him that he can't help but laugh. Part of it is also that nervous laughter, the laugh that goes along with, "I can't believe I'm actually doing this." It's no easy thing to 'know' that you're causing someone pain and go through with it without feeling something. The laughter is his way of releasing that emotional tension.
